[The Formation of Ecclesiastical Frontiers in the Hungarian Kingdom in the 13th and 14th Centuries (The Example of the Provostship of Spiš)]

Abstract: The paper provides an in-depth analysis of the medieval ecclesiastical boundaries’ formation in the Hungarian Kingdom on the example of the Provostship of Spiš. This case is particularly valuable because it offers insight into this issue at a time when historians can rely on a greater number of surviving sources. On the basis of a broad sources’ heuristic, the different sections of the Provostships’ boundaries are analysed successively. The analysis reveals that the key factors in the boundaries creation were the progression and the expansion of settlement in particular areas. There were modifications of the boundaries in the later period, whereby the boundaries of the dioceses were aligned with the boundaries of the secular administrative units – kingdoms and Hungarian counties. The process throughout the 13th and 14th centuries gave rise to ecclesiastical boundaries which, in most cases, survived several major reforms (e. g. erigation of new bishoprics in 1776) and have persisted to the present day.
